From the Interim Pastor
Last year as Oprah was kicking off her Wildest Dreams Tour, she planned to surprise Desperate Housewives’ Felicity Huffman. You see, in an earlier interview Felicity had mentioned her dream of being a back-up singer. And so, Oprah flew Felicity to Chicago to be a back-up singer to Tina Turner on her show. Felicity went through the training and rehearsal and held her own as she sang and danced behind Tina.
It was afterwards, while watching a playback of her performance that Felicity made a rather odd comment; “I look like such a Lutheran.”
Yes, we all have different ideas about what it means to be a Lutheran. Some see being Lutheran as a natural part of who they are; it is simply what they have always been. For others, being Lutheran conjures up the wafts of delicious food coming from the fellowship hall tempting us to head downstairs before the final hymn. Or perhaps Lutherans are simply those people in Minnesota with funny names that Garrison Keillor talks about.
At Reformation, I have heard Lutheran being used to describe the type of worship service we should have. Some see Lutheran worship as being not Roman Catholic, while others see it as being not Baptist. Perhaps Lutheran worship brings to mind a certain style of music, or way that the worship space should look, or the color of the book that is used for the hymns.
Yes, I suppose all these things might be a part of our varied understanding of being a “Lutheran”, which is why I would like to invite you to participate in a series of conversations.
For Lutherans, worship matters. In fact, worship lies at the heart of how we understand ourselves together. Today, worship practices among Lutherans reflect different patterns, different pieties, different ethnic backgrounds and experiences, and some with influences that are not Lutheran at all. For the sake of the mission we share and with the hope of coming to understand more deeply who we are as Lutheran Christians together, I invite members and friends of this congregation into conversation and study about worship.
These conversations will be on Wednesday evenings in June and July, beginning June 28th at 7:00 pm.
In Christ,
Pastor Jeff
