THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER PUBLISHED

FOR THE MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF

REFORMATION LUTHERAN CHURCH

October, 2006

The seventh annual Concert of Sacred and Gospel Music will be held on Reformation Sunday, October 29, 2006 at 3:00 pm. The concert is being sponsored by the Men of Reformation Fellowship Ministry. Tickets are $12.50 and are available from any member of the men’s group or choirs.

The chancel and gospel choirs will again lift their voices in praise singing anthems, spirituals, traditional and contemporary gospel selections. The choirs will again be under the direction of Sheralina Baker and Charlene Jenkins. We are also happy to welcome back Marc D. Jenkins, Sr., organist and Professor Randy Gibson, keyboard accompanist.

“I think this is going to be one of the most exciting concerts we’ve had,” remarked Jim Redmond, “because much of the music is in a cappella form, and the spirituals are reminiscent of the Wings over Jordan chorale of many years ago.”

Please come out and share in an afternoon of wonderful music, fellowship, and praise….and don’t forget to bring all of your family and friends too!

Small Groups

The Thursday evening small group, facilitated by Stephanie Ammons, has resumed. The group will begin the new season with “Busyness: A Spiritual Issue”. This article reflects on being comfortable with what we have done and what we have left undone.

The following week the group will then focus on reading Power Surge By Michael W. Foss, which focuses on changes within a congregation moving from membership to discipleship, and leadership.

If you are interested in joining a small group that studies worship and spiritual journeys, please contact Stephanie (see church directory for telephone number, or wolfsunriz@aol.com).

Calling All Pets and Animal Lovers

On Sunday afternoon, October 8, at 2:00 pm, Reformation will be holding an outdoor service for the Blessing of Animals.  Our pets hold a special place in our families, in our homes, in our hearts, and in God’s creation.  St. Francis of Assisi has long been associated with a love and care for all of God’s creature and so this service, on the Sunday after his October 4th commemoration, will be an opportunity to celebrate and pray God’s blessings upon the various creatures in our lives.

You are invited to bring your cats, dogs, birds, iguanas, hedgehogs, hamsters, or other pets to be blessed during this service.

Please be sure to have them properly leashed or caged!

Message from Pastor Jeff

Over the course of the summer your Congregational Council spent time reading and studying the book Power Surge: Six Marks of Discipleship for a Changing Church, by Michael W. Foss.  One of the key components of the book is the concept of moving from a membership model for congregations to a discipleship model.  Foss summarizes some of the differences of these two models as follows:  “Membership is about getting; discipleship is about giving.  Membership is about dues; discipleship is about stewardship.  Membership is about belonging to a select group with its privileges and prerogatives; discipleship is about changing and shaping lives by the grace of God.”

The marks of discipleship are ways in which those associated with a discipleship church make their faith active in love – those practices of faith that help bridge the gap between beliefs and behaviors.  Members, friends, and visitors receive cards with these six marks.

To the glory of God, I believe I am called…

“to the measure of the full stature of Christ”

Ephesians 4:12

I will strive to . . .

Throughout this fall we will explore these marks on Sundays at Reformation as we consider how we might see ourselves and function moving forward.

Please join us throughout this period as we consider what God is calling us to be and to do as followers of Jesus.

In Christ,

Pastor Jeff

The names of our saints

On the first Sunday of November we celebrate All Saints Sunday.  This is a time to remember those people who God has made holy and who have died, particularly in the past year.  Over the next month, we will be gathering the names of those we want to remember in our worship service on November 5th.  If you have a loved one whose name you would like included in our prayers, please share their name(s) with the church office. We request that all names be submitted no later than Sunday, October 29th.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

THOUGHTS ON GIVING…

As we strive to become a tithing church we ask you to prayerfully and thoughtfully consider some reasons why you should tithe – commitment, generosity, praise, gratitude and joy.  Perhaps tithing reminds us that our lives belong to God and we are his servants and stewards of all that He has provided.  Can you think of your own personal reason(s) for tithing?

“Each of you must make up your own mind how much to give. God loves people who love to give.”   II Corinthians 10:7
