REFORMATION LUTHERAN CHURCH

SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES COMMENCE SEPTEMBER 18,  2005

 

     Reformation Lutheran Church, 1215 E. Vernon Road (at Rugby Street) will commence Sunday School on September 18th at 9:45 A.M.  The classes will accommodate children age three and up to the 8th grade.  There will be a qualified staff of people who will greet you on this date.  You can register your children by coming the first day.

     The pastor of the congregation, Gordon E. Simmons said, “We welcome children to participate in our Christian education program.  It can play an important role in a child’s learning process.” All children are welcome to attend Sunday School at Reformation Lutheran Church. For the Week of SEPTEMBER 7  EDITION

Eighth Grade Tutorial Open to Students

 

     The Academy of Reformation Lutheran Church, Vernon Road and Rugby Street, has announced the opening of the 2005-06 after-school enrichment academy for 8th graders.  The program will offer after-school tutoring and mentoring with a special emphasis on assistance with homework in language arts and mathematics.

     In its fourth year of operation, the Academy provides personalized care for students.  It meets on Mondays to Thursdays, from 3:15-5:45 p.m.  “If you’re concerned about getting your child ready for high school,” explained Ms. Charlene Jenkins, Director of the S-T-R-E-T-C-H Academy, this may be the program for you.”

For the Week of AUGUST 31  EDITION

 

Intern Completes Term at Reformation

     Amber Malone, who has served her pastoral internship at Reformation Lutheran Church, Vernon Road and Rugby Street, since last September,  concluded her work there this week.  A farewell dinner was held at the church on Sunday.  She will be returning to the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, California to conclude her senior year of studies.  Following that she will be eligible for ordination into the Lutheran ministry.

Ms. Malone has distinguished herself at Reformation with her enthusiasm and dedication.  She worked with people of all ages, carrying on various responsibilities, including preaching, teaching, visitation and administration.  During this past summer she played a key role with the children in the church’s summer day camp, Camp RC.  At Reformation, Ms. Malone studied under Gordon E. Simmons, pastor of the congregation.

     Reformation is one of a few sites selected by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to participate in the “Horizon Program”, an effort to train future pastors in urban ministry.

For the Week of AUGUST 10  EDITION

 

Camp RC Sunday Planned at Reformation

            Summer day camp at Reformation Lutheran Church will continue until the end of August, but the campers will take this Sunday to show off some of what they have been doing all summer to their parents and others at the church on Sunday.  Camp RC” participants will be a part of the 11:00 worship service at the church, at Vernon Road and Rugby Street, on Sunday, August 14.

            Nearly 175 different children have been a part of Camp RC this summer, a program directed by Ms. Gloria Hamilton.  Lee Perkins, Robynne McCollum, Sandra Wilson, and Amber Malone have served as assistant directors.  This is the 19th summer for Camp RC.

            The children’s music on Sunday will be under the direction of Charlene Jenkins, Reformation’s minister of music.  Following the service, the church’s youth group will serve an ice cream social.

 For the Week of JULY 13  EDITION

 

Poetry/Jazz Slam Set for Reformation

                 Amateur poets and musicians will be out in force on Saturday, July 23, as Reformation Lutheran Church, Vernon Road and Rugby Street, will hold its 5th annual Poetry/Jazz Summer Slam.  The event will feature more then two dozen of Philly’s most talented poets and jazz musicians, including Philly’s own Eric Wortham II and “Testimony”, a guest rapper from Baltimore.  All are welcome at this sultry, soulful evening of elegant voices and smooth jazz.  There will be food and door prizes.  For ticket information, call 215-548-4332.  The event is a benefit to provide scholarships for college students.
